Objective:
Redesign a trio of book covers in the style of a major art movement.
Approach:
Three books in the Predator franchise were redesigned based on Art Nouveau. Art Nouveau posters, such as Alphonse Mucha's works, served as the main source of inspiration. Art Nouveau's elegance and natural forms pose a striking juxtaposition to the cover designs typically used on Predator novels. The original cover designs are in a 90's graphic art style and encapsulate the violence and macho energy of 80's action movies.
Another influence on cover design was the setting of each book's plot. Concrete Jungle is in New York City, Big Game in New Mexico, and Cold War in Siberia. In the first cover, Art Nouveau architectural elements reference the city. For the latter two books, native plants of the southwestern USA and of Siberia are incorporated in the designs. As for type, the main type face is Art Nouveau in nature but still strong and bold, as befitting the franchise. Overall, these covers retain the color and energy of the series and bring a touch of Mucha's elegance to these brutal blockbuster aliens.
