Objective:

Design an educational children's book in two languages to help stimulate young people's interest in learning their heritage language.

Approach:

Research shows families experience many difficulties in maintaining heritage languages in a country with a different dominant language; in the United States, non-English languages often feel distant and lack relevance to the lives of young would-be learners and speakers. Some ways to assist young people learn a language are language schools, but children's lack of interest can still persist. A possible additional solution is more children's literature in the target language which appeals to the children themselves.

Since many children are interested in the natural world and sciences, particularly dinosaurs, this book utilizes the topic to share science from China to help kindle children's interest in the country and language. Specifically, it introduces a dinosaur find from China which transformed dinosaur paleontology and our understanding of dinosaurs and birds. This demonstrates the relevance of China and Chinese to interesting topics and a children's world.

This draft showcases the welcoming typefaces, natural color scheme, and plucky, curious dinosaur (in contrast to older reptilian depictions of dinosaurs) centered in the book, as well as the manner in which it introduces scientific concepts in a manner accessible to children.
