Objective:
Design, write, and illustrate an educational children's book in two languages to help stimulate young people's interest in learning their heritage language.
Approach:
For context, research shows the difficulties families have in maintaining heritage languages in a country with a different dominant language; non-English languages often feel distant and lack relevance to the lives of young would-be learners and speakers in the United States. However, many children are interested in the natural world and sciences, particularly dinosaurs, so this book utilizes the topic to share science from China to help kindle children's interest in the country and language. Specifically, it introduces a dinosaur find from China which had a major impact on dinosaur paleontology and our understanding of dinosaurs and birds.
